In 2026, the City of Mendrisio will play a key role in an important evolution in the fight against the tiger mosquito by hosting a project based on the sterile insect technique (SIT), coordinated by the Vector Ecology unit of the Institute of Microbiology at SUPSI.
Following campaigns carried out in recent years in several municipalities in Ticino and the encouraging results obtained since 2023 in Morcote, Ascona, and Losone – with a reduction of over 90% in tiger mosquito populations – the trial will continue in 2026 in Mendrisio thanks to the direct support of the City. The aim is to collect additional scientific data to further improve the effectiveness of this technology and its applicability at the municipal level.
