Tiger mosquito in Zurich: how to fight it effectively

24/07/2025

The tiger mosquito is continuously spreading across Europe, including Switzerland. The most affected areas are those with constant introductions, such as historically the canton of Ticino from neighboring Italy. Now, Geneva and the city of Basel are also continuously exchanging tiger mosquitoes with bordering regions. In these areas, people must now live with the presence of the tiger mosquito, and recommended integrated control measures (removal of larval breeding sites and treatment with specific products of those that cannot be removed, such as street drains) help contain their population density. On the other hand, in areas where the mosquito is introduced only occasionally, control measures can lead to its elimination, as was the case in Wollishofen (canton of Zurich).
